How to wash gym leggings so they keep their shape

Most leggings are killed by the wash, not the gym. The elastane that gives them their stretch is a plastic, and heat and softener are what break it down. Four habits keep a pair looking new for years.

Cold water

Thirty degrees or cold. Heat relaxes elastane and it does not fully come back, which is why old leggings go baggy at the knee. Sweat and most gym dirt come out at thirty.

Inside out

The outside of the fabric rubs against everything else in the drum. Turning them inside out puts the wear on the inside and keeps any print or panel on the outside crisp.

No fabric softener

Softener coats the fibres in a waxy film. On cotton that feels nice. On a technical knit it blocks the wicking, so the fabric holds sweat instead of moving it, and the smell gets worse over time. If a pair already smells, a cup of white vinegar in the rinse strips the build up.

Never the tumble dryer

Hang them. They dry in a couple of hours and the elastane never gets cooked. This is the single biggest thing.

Wash them soon

Sweat left in a bag overnight is what sets in. Rinse them in the sink if you cannot wash them the same day.

Our fabric

WAYSHNER training pieces are a polyester and elastane knit. The print is part of the fabric, not on top of it, so it does not crack or peel with washing. The full care note is on every product page, including the Sculpt Legging.
